The IC687BEM731 is a Genius bus controller manufactured by GE Automation and Control that is compatible with the 90-70 Series or PACSystems RX7i systems. The IC687BEM731 is capable of connecting up to 31 additional devices on a single Genius communication bus. The device occupies a slot on the PLC backplane.

Through the Genius bus, the IC687BEM731 is compatible with many types of devices, These include Genius I/O modules, a variety of other programmable logic controllers, remote substations for the 90-70 series systems, Versamax I/O stations, field control stations, and several other host devices that require datagrams and global data for communication.

Selected features of the device include I/O diagnostics, support for redundant systems, datagrams and global data transfer, connection ports for portable monitors, and serial interface ports. For the maximum number of devices connected to the Genius bus, the communication channel rate is measured at 153.6 kbaud. The maximum bus length supported is 7500 feet; However, the communication rate decreases as the bus length increases. The IC687BEM731 supports the following bus types: Daisy chain, shielded Twisted pair (STP) cables, Twinax cables, and possibly fiber optic cables.
