Description

A6500-UM A6500-CC updates and exchanges field control and computer systems

In the process of achieving a balance between productivity and cybersecurity needs, Berta-Annevel Process Solutions (HPS) has announced an industrial site solution. Honeywell’s Secure Media Exchange (SMX) is designed to protect facilities from current and emerging US-USA threats without the need for complex procedures or restrictions that affect business or industrial personnel.

Malware spread via USB devices is a key risk to industrial control systems – employees and contractors use USB devices to patch, update and exchange data from field control and computer systems. According to a BSI publication, this was the second biggest threat to these systems in 2016, with uncontrolled UBS having taken power plants offline, brought down turbine control workstations, and caused flooding of untreated sewage, among other industrial accidents.

Currently, many factories either ban UBS, which is difficult to perform and greatly reduces productivity, or rely on traditional IT malware scanning solutions that are difficult to maintain in industrial control facilities and offer limited protection. These solutions do not protect process control networks from the latest threats, nor do they address targeted or zero-day attacks.

Honeywell’s SMX was developed by the company’s cybersecurity experts, based on field experience with industrial sites around the world and feedback from Honeywell’s customer base. Honeywell is also working with cybersecurity leaders including Microsoft, Intel Security and Palo Alto Networks to develop industrial threat detection technology.

Honeywell’s smx provides multiple layers of protection for managing USB security, allowing users to simply plug in and check the device’s approved use. Contractors “register” their USB drives by plugging them into the SMX Smart Gateway. This rugged industrial appliance leverages a variety of technical analysis files, including Honeywell’s Advanced Threat Intelligence Exchange System, a secure hybrid cloud threat analysis service.
